03.14.17 It's THE BIG ONE
830 AM 3/14/17 Update
Very heavy snow will continue all day long for much of Upstate NY. With surface obs showing the storm center ON the coast, already going to frz rain and rain on Long Island, changing over in NYC and Philly, and with areas from Scranton to Binghamton to the Catskills and Hudson Valley ALREADY at or in excess of ONE FOOT ALREADY... and with the radar lit up like a 4th of July fireworks show... This is now a perfect set up for much of Upstate NY to be BULLSEYE... Forget everything we said yesterday and especially two days ago... It's the big one and it's here. Not since Valentine's Day 2007 has a big storm like this come along.
We update the snow map YET AGAIN. Expected storm totals as of now...
The bands of extremely heavy snow seem to be setting up on an arc from Scranton/WB to Binghamton to Chenango/Otsego Counties, to the Capital/Saratoga Region. It's in this area (and parts of CNY and the Catskills) where the heaviest snow totals will be found. Given what has already fallen, snow totals for hardest hit areas in excess of 24-36 inches are now likely.
We've now crossed into territory of only the great storms and Nor'easters. It's now serious and a matter of public safety at this point. Don't travel unless it's a life threatening emergency. Try to leave work early if you can or don't go if you can. If you are traveling, snowsuit, shovel, water and food and blankets on you... it's a situation where first responders may not be able to help quick, especially in rural areas. Hunker down.
Winds will pick up tonight and tomorrow and blow this snow around. Wrap around snow plus additional lake effect snow will follow Wednesday, especially in CNY and areas along and west of I-81.
