03.16.17 What can you say?
The heavy snows are gone but more cold and snow is on the way. This is not a one shot deal... the weather through the next two weeks will resemble January.
Forgive us for the delay in updating. We had to dog out ourselves!
And we said pre storm this was no Blizzard of '93. We were right and wrong. Wrong in the fact we thought it would be this big. Right in the fact event the Blizzard of '93 didn't put down this much snow, this fast1
After a historic snowstorm beyond all expectations (24" to 48" for a wide swath of Upstate NY), winter has come to stay until April. It's very possible, given the forecast now, we could still have snow on the ground for Easter, April 16th. Just when we thought it was over and we all had bare ground and our mind on spring projects, this sets us back about a month from getting into the backyard and mowing lawn. If you've already put away the sleds and stabilized them, get them back out! You have 2-4 weeks of season with 7:30 PM sunsets awaiting you. Take advantage!
What a difference a few days make
Now the snowcover. The modeling is WAY offf. Most of Upstate should be in GREEN for 2' + of cover. Out backyards in CNY have over 30-36" of cover!
MORE COLD AND SNOW COMING
Temps will stay cold today and Friday. Another clipper turning into a (much weaker) storm on the coast will hit Saturday and bring minor additional lake snows in back of it. We'll add fresh snow to the pile!
And in late March, the highs average a snow killing 45-50 F by day with the sun as high in the sky as it is in September... we'll have trouble later next week hitting our average lows of 30 F... Big cold middle of next week. March in total will probably be colder than February! Here's the long range
SO WHAT ABOUT RIDING
Clubs that were closed have reopened. Everyone is scrambling to get trails back open. Don't complain, give them a hand! Many trees are down and trails need help to get rideable! The best riding will be in the Tug Hill and ADK's where there was still a base left that survived the warm temps prior to this. There is more than enough to ride your local trails anywhere across the state. Who would have thought after how it was a few days ago that almost all of the 10K miles of trails in NY would have rideable snow on them? ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK WITH CLUBS to find out where trails are open, where they need help and where snow/grooming is best.
It should be a great weekend to ride. Next week will offer great riding as all this snow freezes down with a nice cold snap. Weekend of March 25-26 looks great for riding too at this point. Can't believe we're writing this but it's looking that way! April riding in the Tug and ADK's looks very likely.
We don't advise riding any lakes despite recent cold. Riding lakes in late March is sketchy anyway, and ice thickness is less than normal. 2' of snow hides a lot of danger under the snow. We've already lost a lot of sleds to ice this year on lakes.
Don't ride alone... so much powder out there you can get stuck easily. Be safe, slow down and enjoy this reward for our patience.
