It continues to be snowy all across Upstate NY! A majority of folks received 4 to 8 inches of snow yesterday. A few got more. A few got less. Most of it (probably about 75% of the Upstate) fell into this category. We get a break today. Tonight and tomorrow not so much. We don’t have any advisories out downwind of the Great Lakes, however, I am telling you it’s a borderline situation. Don’t be surprised if these pop up last minute. Snow overnight and tomorrow with localized squalls and falling temperatures.
Then the bone chilling cold arrives. Thursday Night and into Friday Morning it’s supposed to get super cold. Utica has a 99 year old record, a -4 set in 1926. We have a chance to beat that. After that we have more cold and stuff coming after that this weekend and next week.
We start tonight and into tomorrow with our next cold front and brief blast of lake effect snow that will be coming in behind it. There will be snow, heavy at times, the question is for how long. The NWS is not thinking all of that long which is probably why no advisories are up now. Again. Watch out for these in a few counties downwind of the lake at the last minute. And even so, the snowfall amounts will not be great and not over a large area like last time.
Then it gets BONE CHILLING COLD! How cold? BELOW ZERO COLD FOR ABOUT EVERYONE ALONG AND NORTH OF THE THRUWAY! The record low for Utica/Rome is -4 set in 1926. Want to break a 99 year old weather record? WATCH OUT FRIDAY MORNING! IT COULD HAPPEN THEN!
Over the weekend it looks like any significant weather in terms of rain and/or snow will be held well to the south of Upstate NY into the Mid Atlantic, the Virginia’s and the Carolina’s. What will be left over Upstate NY will be cold conditions with scattered snow showers and more areas of lake effect on Saturday but particularly on Sunday. At this point accumulations appear to be light.
Early next week the next bitter cold blast comes on in. More record lows are possible on this second round as well with temperatures expected to get BELOW ZERO for at least another few nights. All of these cold below zero nights in December is early for sure!
Temperatures continue to be pointed straight down in the medium range and the long range. Do you want to know the earliest time period when above normal temperatures are predicted here? SPRING 2026! Yep. Get used to this! The song and dance has only begun!
