I know it’s not riding season. Not even close yet. But this is the time of year to when things start turning in our favor, with the weather, we will report on it. Today is one of those days.
Not the next three days. Nope. This is near summer like conditions with highs well into the 70’s and in some locations into the lower 80’s. It’s not quite record high territory, but it’s close. We need this weekend for a stronger cold front to come on through and change the wind directions around. We need cooler weather to get those trees progressing towards peak foliage. It’s nearly there in the Adirondacks and Catskills, at least it will be this week, but next week with the cooler temperatures settling in, we want the leaf changes to move off of the mountains.
This weekend temperatures will drop into the 60’s for highs. By the end of the weekend and into early next week, rural and higher elevation locations will be stuck in the 50’s for highs. This is good. In fact, next week, for the first full week of October, some locations in the higher elevations of Upstate NY may struggle just to hit the 50’s. What about overnight lows? Yep, a lot of rural locations have already seen the first frost. Not the bigger cities and valley areas. Not yet though. Over the next 5-10 days I would say it would almost be a guarantee.
What about snow? You know it’s way too early, but I know we are all excited for it! I don’t see it prior to Columbus Day. Have we seen it before during this period? Yes we have. It is rare, about a 1/10 chance. We may be overdue. But in a very strong El Nino year, I would not put anything past Mother Nature.
