HERE IT IS: THIS WILL BE THE FIRST FLAKES OF THE YEAR FOR MOST OF UPSTATE NY. ESPECIALLY ABOVE THE VALLEY FLOORS, SAY ABOVE 500′. ABOVE 1000′, YOU ARE LOOKING AT YOUR FIRST DUSTING TO 1″ OF THIS 2026-27 SEASON. THAT WILL MAINLY BE IN GRASSY AREAS. AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 1500′, ESPECIALLY IN THE ADIRONDACKS, CATSKILLS, AND WESTERN NY, YOUR FIRST INCH OR MORE OF SNOW IS LIKELY ENOUGH FOR US TO PUT IT INTO THE FORECAST.
REMEMBER: MOST OF THESE ARE FOR GRASSY AREAS. REMEMBER OUR ROADS AND PAVEMENTS ARE WAY TOO WARM TO ABSORB THIS SNOWFALL AND HAVE IT STICK FOR LONG, IF AT ALL.
OK DON’T PANIC HERE. IT IS OCTOBER. THESE EVENTS HAPPEN NOT EVERY YEAR, BUT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT. THIS ONE IS HAPPENING A LITTLE BIT EARLIER THAN USUAL. IT’S NOT THE EARLIEST THOUGH. WE HAVE ALREADY PASSED THOSE THREHOLDS BASED ON THE OCTOBER STORMS WE HAVE ALREADY REVISITED.
Our potent storm comes roaring through Friday. It starts off in the 50’s to low 60’s across most of Upstate NY. Then the winds come roaring in behind it during the afternoon, with gusts 20-40 MPH. The rain falls. The temperatures fall. Then Friday Night and into Saturday Morning comes. This is the time this storm will leave it’s mark. This is when it gets cold enough for rain to change to snow in the higher elevations first. Then it moves on down as Saturday Morning approaches. Does it reach the valley floors, say Syracuse, Buffalo or Albany? Probably just a few flakes, if that. In the suburbs of each of these cities, it definitely will. Especially in areas that have some height above the cities.
In Buffalo I am thinking Orchard Park, and areas in the South Towns above that zone, in Syracuse I am thinking south side to Onondaga Hill and points south, and in Albany, I am definitely thinking of the Heidelberg’s and points south and west, and south and east on the other side of the Hudson. Western NY above 1000′ to 1500′. Near the Hudson? BUPKIS!

This will fizzle out Saturday as our storm goes on by. It will still be breezy to windy and temperatures will not climb out of the 30’s over a lot of Upstate NY on Saturday. Only in the lower elevation cities should it hit or exceed 40 degrees like Albany or Buffalo. It clears out on Saturday Night and it turns COLD! HARD FREEZE EVERYWHERE! It will be in the 20’s over ALL OF UPSTATE NY BY SUNDAY MORNING. TEENS IN THE COLDEST SPOTS! If there are any spots still hanging on to a growing season and still have plants surviving, this weekend it’s GAME OVER.

During next week it will warm up again. It will be above normal before you know it! By this time next week, whatever happens this Friday Night and Saturday Morning will be just a memory. The first snows of 2026-27 are coming. Get ready and we will see who gets what this weekend. Then we will probably take a break as we go through another warm spell.
