We have had decent snows overnight, especially across Western, Central, Eastern and Northern NY. In particular, north of the Thruway seemed to get hit best. Send me your accumulations on our Facebook page. I would like to know where I landed on this one.
Merry Christmas Eve! The snow shoveling, snow blowing, plowing and clearing that many of you will have to do for Christmas Eve, especially to ensure a good gathering of friends and family later this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow, I am sure brings your heart joy! For most, if not all of you, this guarantees a White Christmas since 2022, and for others, since 2018. It is hard to believe that for some of you it has been over half a decade since a White Christmas! In an area with a better than 50/50 chance of it, even in the lower elevations, it’s great to see it finally happen again!
Tomorrow with temperatures below freezing most if not all of the day, the snow will stick around. No melting of it this time! It gradually warms up a few degrees each day, starting to get us into slow melting at the end of this week. The melting will be faster this weekend and into early next week. It will not be a washout. It will not be blow torch warmth. But with everyone and their grandmother out on a sled after Christmas Day, and not a lot of snow out there, expect trails to get beat down quickly. By this weekend, I would expect much less than I would Thursday or Friday. And heading into next week with temperatures during the day into the 40s everywhere, I would expect not much to be left.
After the New Year, especially by the first weekend in January, I would expect a pattern shift and temperatures to return to near normal to below normal. Given this time of year we are in, that should be good for whatever snow is there. And trust us, by early January, until we get another shot of snow like the one we just had, there will be little to none.
