THE WRECK

This storm will hit hard over the next few hours with heavy rain, embedded thunderstorms, and a squall line with high winds possible with it. We have not said anything about it to this point on this site, but especially with all the winds we have had, plus what is to come through tonight, WATCH OUT ON THE TRAILS! First of all, on a day like today, these trails across the Tug Hill and Adirondacks should be BARE! Everyone should be hunkered down. NO ONE should be out in this wind, rain and then snow later. It will be an absolute mess of it today! Just 6 days before Christmas!

The squall line marches on through the state to where by early this afternoon it is around Eastern NY. 40s and 50s ahead of it. 20s and a return to SNOW behind it. Will it be a lot of snow? Nope. Outside of the normalized lake effect areas, think of how much snow pack we lose and what’s left to gain. We are in the hole!

But we try to play catchup. It is a losing battle, but we at least try to play catch up anyway. We will see exactly who fares well. And we will have tomorrow morning in our blog the best recommendations for where to try this weekend. If you can.

Yes. There is enough out there I can put up my first snowfall map since Monday. A winter where it goes 4 days between this? How about a few weeks between them like it has been the last several years? Don’t even get me started on that!

Next system rolls in on Sunday. This is a weak system with snow showers, and a few inches of accumulation. I honestly do not expect a whole lot from this one.

Tuesday would be the better system to watch. This one is not 100% either. It’s not a WIPEOUT but it is not a BINGO storm. If anything, this weak storm is a MIX MESS with some accumulation of snow to start, then a mix of rain and snow in the afternoon in the lower elevations before changing back to snow in the evening then ending.

Christmas Eve is fine. Santa and his reindeer arrive under variably cloudy skies and typically cold conditions. The clouds increase Christmas Morning and by Christmas Day in the afternoon and evening, the next system comes in. Remember how all these systems have gone since 2017? Yep. in 2025, 8 years later, we are still on the “RAIN” pattern. We just cannot break this streak no matter what we try!

OR IS IT??? It won’t be a BLOWTORCH, grilling outside, in short sleeves weather, like it has been many years in this break between Christmas and New Years. If anything, NORMAL. So that means SNOW IS POSSIBLE! It won’t be the way it has been, HOWEVER, it definitely will not be anywhere near the deep cold and snow we would want. For now.
