The Morning Blog 01.12.26

The Morning Blog is brought to you by the Ilion Snow Drifters of Herkimer County, NY! This club is definitely on the borderline of snowy areas with not enough snow and closures to the south and west of their systems for sure right now. But with the forecast looking good over the next several days to few weeks, expect that to change! You should be able to experience most if not all of the nearly 100 miles of their groomed trails along with their clubhouse. For more information on this club CLICK HERE.

Good morning. From Wednesday to Saturday to Monday. This just is not good. It keeps looking worse before it looks better. Indeed it will look better, it will get better, we will ride again, and when we ride again, it will be for a while this time! Just know as it took days to bring us to this point, it will take days to bring us back.

Monday 1/12 – 7 AM

TONIGHT
There is another weak storm system coming on down from Canada tonight. As it passes by, expect snow showers to break out. There will be periods of briefly heavier snows across the higher elevations of the North Country and the Adirondacks but nothing to write home about.

TUESDAY NIGHT
The next system comes rushing in by late Tuesday to where Tuesday Night and into Wednesday Morning, another blast of snow showers with lower elevation rain showers, will be in play. This will also require another accumulations map. That will come forth tomorrow morning.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT
The temperatures take one last swing upward, in this case even the higher elevations get hit with changeover to rain or a mix for a time, with the lower elevations getting into the 40-45 degree range. The 995 mb low passes to our north and west over the St. Lawrence Valley then the colder air follows it in time to change this to all snow by Thursday. Again, in this situation, it’s best to handle the snow map on a one day basis. This would be too far at the moment.

THE MEDIUM RANGE EXTENDED

Looking into MLK Weekend for next weekend, through all of the next week, then into two weekends from now with the AFC/NFC Championship Games, the temperatures are clearly showing up as BELOW NORMAL all across not just Upstate NY but the entire Northeast US. This is the coldest two weeks of the entire year. Right now. Our highs are in the 20s to around 30 during the day, single digits and teens at night. Being below that, you can guarantee we will be in a position to increase our snow pack on land, our ice pack on the lakes, and overall just nice winter conditons.

LONG RANGE WINTER OUTLOOK

What about beyond that point and heading into February? The last days of January and the first days of February continue to show the Northeast US, including Upstate NY, locked into BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. The coldest time if year + Below Normal = WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!

I am sure while most of the season outside of the typical Tug Hill and North Country/Adirondack areas is off to a slow start yet again, especially with the January thaw this past week, the looking ahead to the short, medium and longer term solutions for Upstate NY should have you happy! It should have you making plans! It should have you getting ready to ride!
